Primary School Musical Instruments Purchased with Grant Funds

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Executive Board approved up to $800,000 in funding for grants to benefit elementary music programs across the state. This grant program is a benefit offered exclusively to active TMEA members who teach elementary music. It started in 2013 and comes around every four years to the Elementary level as it rotates to all areas of Music Education. Funds ($800 per winning school) must be used by elementary music teachers (PK–5) to purchase music, music equipment, instruments, instructional software, and other music educational materials for use during this school year.   Mrs. Destiny Pennington, the Music specialist at Pine Ridge Primary, is a long-time member of TMEA, applied for the grant where students would be able to have numerous class sets of instruments. With the current pandemic conditions, she wanted to be able to provide more quality instruments that could stand up to the multiple cleanings a day. She has created several homemade instruments, used coffee cans for drums, and created a system to allow students to have a hands-on experience with instruments with also being safe from spreading germs. With the instruments awarded, she is able to have more class sets for children to enjoy and create music. Along with the instruments, the Primary campus received story songbooks for all to enjoy and adaptive instruments for students with physical needs to actively participate.    This is Mrs. Pennington’s second time receiving this grant. Previously, she was awarded three large xylophones to add to the Orff instrument collection.
